Enric Miralles (II)

Seis viviendas en Borneo Eiland, Amsterdam, HOL | Six dwellings in Borneo Eiland, Amsterdam, NL
Diversión, color y experimentación frente a dureza, homogeneidad y monotonía
Experimentation, colour and fun against toughness, uniformity and monotony
Lugar

Place

If place is one of those momentos when thought is woven with reality…
In this sense, the drawing, even the paper itself, is place for an instant… The rules that let us avance also appear in it. Blank paper neve exists. It is only an invisible backing… if we accept the rules of the page, it is to forget it. Shifts and turns makes the paper lose its sheet nature. It is a working structure. Its rules are those of economics and commodity.
On these plans there is no concern to represent… it is a task of multiplying a single intuition: of seeing it appear in all its possible forms… of aligning acrobatically, like a game, all the rays of lines that go in a direction… of keeping all the aspects of one’s project on paper.
It is not a question of accumulating data, but of multiplying them; of enabling what you had not thought of to appear… thus you advance through successive commencements. Time after time, as if each one was definitive –dismantling, changes of scale-.
The best aspects of a sketch are the intermediate states… seeing it appear… what is left over for another job. Movement through a building, led by its laws.
The new situations that are arise are what redefine the distance from it to the starting point. The building becomes the privileged place where we ponder on the origin of our path. The building accompanies us a long way. It turns us into privileged observers. Thus, the mode and the construction return us to thought about the origin of our path. This air, now enclosed, ought to express the absence of what existed here. On the other hand, what appears here is something that we would never had thought possible there.
The empty space cannot disappear after working on it. It is an expression of this absence. Only architecture can bring it about, not by allusion, nor by displacement, nor by emptying, nor by omission or oversight. Silence is the response to the new distance that has been defined in terms of what exits.
In La Llauna, inside the factory, we find the dimension and light which does not exist in the service road. We find the privileged place among the existing structure of wooden horses: a distant view of the sea, light… One of those places only accessible during construction is a step towards the floors. An emptied interior. Staying near the areas reserved for construction. Those that make the empty space possible.

From Aalto to Utzon

"[Jorn Utzon about Aalto] Therefore, along his urban perspective, these two problems he faced made him consider every house and family as independent units. In such a beatiful way, he explained that if you see a cherry tree's blossom, a group of flowers from a tree, each flower has a different position according to the sun and its surrounding ones. Every flower is different in its position, but all of them create the same family. This idea of planning is what I've used, for instance, in some projects about patio houses, where I took every family as an independent unit, with its own indoor life inside these houses; each house have neighbours, though and, all together, they make a community, a whole thing, which is like a bunch of cherry flowers. A Peter Zumthor's easy-to-read, brief and very interesting text from Atmospheres. Nothing else to add. We hope you enjoy it as we do!

[...]Seventh. Something else, something very special that fascinates me about architecture. Tension between lnterior and Exterior. A fantastic business, this. The way architecture takes a bit of the globe and constructs a tiny box of it. And suddenly there's an interior and an exterior. One can be inside or outside. Brilliant! And that means -equally brilliant!- this: thresholds, crossings, the tiny loop-hole door, the almost imperceptible transition between the inside and the outside, an incredible sense of place, an unbelieveable feeling of concentration when we suddenly become aware of being enclosed, of something enveloping us, keeping us together, holding us -wheter we be many or single. An arena for individuals and the public, for the private and public spheres. Architecture knows this and uses it. I own a castle. That's where I live and that is the facade I present to the outside world. The facade says: I am, I can, I want -in other words, whatever the owner and his architect wanted when they built it. The facade also says: but I am not going to show you everything. Sure, there are things inside -but you go and mind your own business. That's what castles are like- that's what town flats are like. We use signals. We observe. I don't know if this passion of mine affects you in the same way. This isn't voyeurism. On the contrary, it has a great deal to do with atmospheres. Think of Rear Window -Alfred Hitchcock. Life in a window observed without. A classic. You see this woman in a lit window wearing a red dress, and you've got no idea what's she's up to. But then -yes, you do see something! Or the reverse: Edward Hopper's Early Sunday Morning, with the woman sitting in a room, looking out of a window at the town. I'm proud of the way we can do that as architects with every building we make. And whenever I'm doing a building I always imagine it in those terms: what do I want to see -me or someone else using this building later- when I am inside? And what do I want other people to see of me? And what sort of statement do I want to make publicly?  Buildings always say something to a street or the square. They can say to the square: I am really glad to be situated on this square. Or they could say: I am the most beautiful building here -you lot all look ugly, I am a dive. Buildings can say that sort of thing. [...]

Enric Miralles (I)

Walking...
Tracks as writting on the surface we move or ponder on... That trace which corresponds to the movement we believe we discover in the place. That elementary sign accompanying the shift from one place to another... Fragments of these movements describe a geometry linked to reality: they envelop real shapes.
In Parets, several roofs roughly accompany the act of walking... they draw a path for the observer. In this sense, like the Hosptalets ramps, they do not show us the path we have to take, but rather are ones that give shape to the project. The graduation of shadows... a sketch that relates to the movemenr of a marginal mode. They are traces that occupy the whole space, touching its extreme points. They correspond to the intuitive lines with which you cross out a zone to mark it... from the edges inwards. They are furthest away from the marks that enclose a property.
In the cemetery, that sign is a form of thinking naturally, following the notion of precision that makes up a path. It cuts across like a trail, dividing the fluids as it goes...
If we wished the path in Parets to be intuitive, here a dual there-and-back movement what is what covers the whole terrain, leaving it untouched. Developing the project has meant distancing ourselves from the narrative aspects that accompany garden paths, which in a cemetery are unbearable. It has meant working inside the foregoing lines: halting in movement.
Halting to think of something else, multiplying the forking paths, the intermediate spaces, the escape points... R.B. tell us that Z and S are the same letter seen from opposite sides of the mirror... Here, it is work inside such an oblique cross-section. S makes Z possible for us, or vice versa.
